Finally, the long overdue Cap reboot is here! Since the release of Sam Rami’s first Spiderman movie, there have been rumors that a whole new series of super hero movies were to be released. And when the rumors were confirmed, it was a very happy day for all of us Marvel fans. Unfortunately, the Captain America release date kept getting pushed back further and further, which was torture for some of us. But alas, years and years of waiting finally paid off, and on July 22 ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ was released.
At first I wasn’t too sure about how Chris Evans would do in the role of Captain America, with him generally playing the pretty boy, jock, or… um… an “a hole” type character, but he did an excellent job. He was great as Steve Rodgers, and an awesome Cap.
For the beginning portion of the movie there was some of that movie magic to superimpose Chris Evans’ head on a small skinny body. It was a little unusual to see, partially because people are used to seeing him as a buff built guy, and also partially because his head seems a little too large for the body in some of the shots. Regardless of how unusual it seemed, it got the point across, especially the scene where Rodgers has the Super Soldier Serum injected.
If I had to put this movie in a certain genre, it would be categorized as a modern 80’s action movie, similar to ‘The Expendables’, but for comic book geeks. The plot is kind of lacking in detail, there isn’t a lot of dialogue, and for non Captain America fans it may not make a whole lot of sense, but there is a ton of action. If you have absolutely no knowledge of Captain America before going to see this movie, it may be a bit confusing. There isn’t a lot of explanation of who anyone is, or what is going on. You get the general idea of the storyline, but the average moviegoer will still have a lot of questions.
This movie is great for Marvel fans if you’re not too into having the movie follow the comic line by line, and kind of a disappointment for non-marvel fans. It could be confusing, and a lot of occurrences seem out of the ordinary if you aren’t familiar with the Captain America storyline. Overall, the best way to describe this movie is a set up for ‘The Avengers’, which is to be released next spring. As much as it saddens me to say, that kind of seems to be the only reason for this movie’s existence. The plot and storyline could have been better, but no matter how much of a mediocre movie this is, with Captain America being my favorite super hero it was still awesome, ok maybe not awesome, but I know I’ll be watching it again and again.
