Looking for an insanely inexpensive pair of headphones but still want decent sound quality? The Monoprice hi-fi DJ style over the ear headphones (quite the name) is the answer for the geek on a budget. Generally I would go for something that had amazing sound quality, noise cancelling tech, and had ear pads that feel like they were made out of the wings of 1,000 angels, but I wanted to find something I could take out into the field while shooting video and not have to be super intense about making sure they were alright. All headphones that have the above qualities tend to be a bit pricey, so they would have to be babied.

The Monoprice hi-fi headphones fit within the price range of not having to worry about if your purchase suddenly gets run over or dropped off the third story (production life can be hazardous). And for $18.99 the price is just right to not have to worry at all about them getting obliterated (seriously, it can be REALLY hazardous).ear headphones (quite the name) is the answer for the geek on a budget. I ordered them online, like I do with the most of my electronics, because it doesn’t involve me venturing out into the big scary world. Amazon baby, excellent. The packaging seems like you ordered a pair of Bose headphones, it’s nice. It also comes with two cables, oh yea, probably should’ve mentioned that. The headphone cable plugs into the headphones, so you can wrap the cable separately. Pretty convenient. Anyway, it comes with two cables. One lightweight version that is about the same gauge as ear buds, and a heavier gauge cable that is great if you’re moving around.

The Monoprice headphones also fold up nicely. The over the ear portion of the headphones swivel around, and also fold up into theover the head strap. They can compact to about half their normal size. I’ve used them when traveling, and they fold small enough to fit in a carry on, and actually do fairly well on an airplane. Of course, using a pair of noise cancelling headphones will do much, much better, but for no noise cancellation, it limits a good portion of noise let in.

Now, finally on to the sound quality. I am by no means an audiophile, I don’t live for perfect sound, and I don’t notice if the mids are .03 dB’s higher than they should be (don’t even know if that was an actual saying). What I CAN tell you is that I know the difference between a crappy generic brand of headphones and a set of high-end headphones, I mean who can’t right? I’ve met some people. The Monoprice headphones actually tip towards the high-end side of the scale. I mean by no means are they anywhere near the quality of something like Bose headphones, but for $18.99 they’re pretty damn impressive. Everything tone wise is pretty evenly balanced. The treble isn’t too high, and it can deliver pretty good bass when needed.

I’ve checked out most of the major brands in the same price range, and the sound quality didn’t seem to keep up. I do have one downside to these headphones, after about a year of use, the sound in the right speaker is going out. It seems like there’s a bad connection where the cable plugs into the earpiece, because if I move the head of the cable around it fixes itself for a bit. Now, I won’t be marking it down too much for this, actually not really at all, because I’ve used the hell out of them. Video production, gaming, movies, guitar playing, these things have been through a bunch, and for the price I can’t really complain that they’re finally going after their beating. I’m actually kind of impressed they’ve lasted this long. For the price I don’t think you can beat the Monoprice hi-fi headphones. Great quality, great deal.
